Go Cook ʻUm — Sharing Homemade Meals and Aloha

Community Service | Food, Fellowship & Community Care

A homemade meal. A helping hand. A little aloha shared every week.

Sometimes, making a difference begins with something as simple as preparing a good meal for someone else.

Through Go Cook ʻUm, members of the Rotary Club of Hilo come together each week to prepare homemade lunches for residents of Hawaiʻi Island Home for Recovery (HIHR).

It's a hands-on community service program that brings Rotarians together in the kitchen, combining the joy of cooking with the satisfaction of helping our neighbors.

More than simply preparing food, Go Cook ʻUm reflects something at the heart of Rotary: sharing our time, talents, and aloha to make life a little better for others.

About the Program

A Little Time in the Kitchen Can Make a Big Difference

Every Thursday, members of the Rotary Club of Hilo gather to do something wonderfully simple: cook a homemade lunch for our neighbors at Hawaiʻi Island Home for Recovery.

There are meals to prepare, ingredients to bring together, and the familiar teamwork that happens when friends share a kitchen.

And while the activity may seem ordinary, its purpose is anything but.

For people working to overcome homelessness and rebuild their lives, a nourishing meal is one less daily concern. It is a practical contribution that supports the broader work of recovery and stability.

For our Rotarians, Go Cook ʻUm offers an opportunity to help in a direct and personal way.

It's community service without a lot of ceremony — just people showing up, working together, and doing something good for others.

Supporting Hawaiʻi Island Home for Recovery

Our community partner, Hawaiʻi Island Home for Recovery, has spent more than 20 years helping individuals and families experiencing homelessness move toward housing stability, greater independence, and renewed opportunity.

Through housing assistance and individualized support services, HIHR helps people address challenges, access essential resources, and develop the skills needed to move forward.

Go Cook ʻUm complements that important work by providing homemade lunches for the people HIHR serves.

Our club's relationship with HIHR also extends beyond the kitchen. Through Hilo Brewfest and the Rotary Club of Hilo Foundation, Rotary helps provide financial support for the organization's mission.

Together, these activities demonstrate how volunteer service, fundraising, and community partnerships can reinforce one another.

What Our Volunteers Do

Go Cook ʻUm is a regular, hands-on service opportunity where Rotary members can contribute their time while enjoying the fellowship of working together.

Preparing Homemade Lunches

Volunteers gather to prepare a meal for HIHR residents. From helping prepare ingredients to cooking and organizing the food, everyone contributes to the day's effort.

Working Together

Whether you're comfortable in the kitchen or simply willing to lend a hand, Go Cook ʻUm provides an opportunity to participate in a shared act of service.

Rotarians bring different skills and experiences, but everyone shares the same goal: preparing a good meal for our neighbors.

Bringing Friendship and Aloha

One of the rewards of Go Cook ʻUm is the opportunity to spend time with fellow members while doing something meaningful.

The teamwork, conversations, and friendships formed through regular service activities are part of what makes Rotary special.

Our Community Impact — Service in Action

Every Thursday offers another opportunity to serve.

Through Go Cook ʻUm, our Rotarians demonstrate that community service doesn't always require a large event or major fundraising effort. Sometimes, the most meaningful contributions come from consistently showing up and doing something helpful.

Here are some of the meals, volunteers, and moments that tell the Go Cook ʻUm story.
