Hike and Ginger eradication in volcano DIRECTIONS & PARKING: We will meet at KMC (Kilauea Military Ca mp: 99-252 Crater Rim Dr\, Volcano\, HI 96785 ) in front of the Admin bui lding which is the large building in the front row of buildings near the flagpole. There is parking available there. We will take care of paperw ork\, do a brief intro\, brush boots to remove non-native seeds and spray the boots with isopropyl alcohol for Rapid Ohia Death prevention. (Time 8:30 - 9:00). We will then drive to the Devastation Trail parking lot wh ere the hike will begin. The hike will take about 45 minutes and will in clude an introduction to the native forest and geology. The hike will en d up at the work site. We will explain the work process and get to work. (Time 9:00 - 12:00.) SERVICE PROJECT DETAILS: Join our Collaborative Service Project on Saturday\, July 16th\ , 2022 with Eco Rotary Club of Kaka'ako on Oahu and the Rotary Clubs of H ilo\, Hilo Bay\, South Hilo\, Pahoa Sunset and Volcano. Come help out the park and the 'āina (land) by cutting invasive himalayan ginger (Heydechi um gardnerianum) on park trails. Loppers and gloves are provided. Partici pants are encouraged to wear long sleeve shirts\, long pants and closed t oed shoes. Work is often in the shade of the forest with sweet sounds of native honey creepers like 'apapane\, 'amakihi and 'ōma'o above to serena de as you work. Water\, snacks\, rain gear and sun protection are recomme nded. The hike is around a 3-4 miles\, moderate round trip. The hike invo lves walking over rough uneven terrain on a dirt and rock path\, with up to a 400' elevation change.
