Rotary Scholarship Winner

The Rotary Club of Hilo presented their 2015 Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation (HRYF) Scholarship winner, Mary Economy at their May 1 meeting.  Mary is an honors student at Waiakea High School.  She will be going to Boston University in the Fall as a Mechanical Engineering major.

Presenting today's scholarship was the club's long time liaison to the Foundation, Mitch Dodo.  In addition to Mitch, three other club members, Tina Jimenez, Cindy Boots and Alan Kusunoki, participated in the interview and selection process for our winner.  Mitch said they were, "Looking for the best of the best", in their selection of Mary. Some years back her sister, Christina Economy, was the club's scholarship winner and is now working on an advanced degree at Cambridge University in England.

Joining Mary at today's meeting were her sisters, Jacqueline and Louise Economy. Also shown above are Past President Mitch Dodo and the current President, Richard Johnson. Unfortunately her parents were traveling and could not attend.

HRYF was founded in 1977 by Rotary's District Governor, Maurice J. "Sully" Sullivan and has presented over $5.3 Million in scholarships. HRYF programs are financed by contribution from Rotarians, Rotary Clubs individuals and various other foundations.

The club certainly congratulates Mary as being the "Best of the Best" and we wish her luck in her scholastic endeavors.
